Cool stuff from OCWIC:

Did you miss going to OCWIC? Or possibly just miss BEING at OCWIC?

Check out the website for

* a recap (www.cse.osu.edu/ocwic)
* photos (http://www.cse.osu.edu/ocwic/picture.html)
* blogs (http://www.cse.osu.edu/ocwic/blog.html)
* presentation slides (http://www.cse.osu.edu/ocwic/program.html)
* ... and even the famous Legendary Women in Computing (http://www.cse.osu.edu/ocwic/docs/legendsincomputing.pdf)

The presentation by Karen Davis had some neat ideas for lessons about computing that don't need computers.

I got a chance to see a litle of ALICE, a drag-and-drop programming language, and I think that might be fun for the girls.

Enjoy the links.

Got this in my email today from Suzanne Menzel, a faculty member at IU Bloomington:

Are you interested in creating a K-12 outreach program for your college or university? If so, then you might consider signing up for our upcoming SIGCSE workshop. This hands-on workshop is appropriate for anyone (undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, staff) who wants to get started on creating an actual presentation. You'll also learn how to connect with K-12 schools and take your show on the road. For more information, please see our NCWIT blog entry:

http://www.ncwit.org/connect.blog.php?source=calendar&action=display&editorial_id=167

Please feel free to contact me or Katie Siek if you have any questions.

Suzanne

Is this something we should check out?

Some thoughts on budgets

Hi everyone. Kris, thanks much for setting this up.

I just wanted to sketch out some ideas as we begin to think about funding. Below is a partial list of expenses that come to mind for me. Feel free to add anything I forgot and I will keep tweaking the list till we meet again in person.

Mailings -- will need to pay for recruiting letters to area high schools

Meals -- I am thinking three breakfasts, three lunches, two dinners (will probably send folks home late afternoon of final day) -- we can check into meal plans on campus, maybe cater from Panera or other downtown business (may be able to get meals sponsored too)

Room and board - Looks like accommodations for 12-ish girls and a couple of chaperones each nigh, probably 7 rooms total -- check with university

DVDs, CDs, other tech supplies -- possible sponsors from local businesses or the university

Transportation -- will we pick up girls or have folks bring them? Will need transportation on first and last day and also for any possible evening activities or field trips

Insurance -- I'm not sure what this entails but am assuming we'll make some arrangements cover students, our liability

OK, so that's what I'm thinking so far. I'm sure more will pop up.

I thought I would post the link to the Ohio Celebration of Women in Computing info for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. I have to get moving on some (very) preliminary results to present for my session. I might have been a little overoptimistic, but it will be fun to get some feedback on my thinking/constructions and it should push to get more done.

I was wondering if we might want to switch this "blicki" to the new Blogger. All you need is a Google account. There isn't a lot of difference except that the layout is easier to customize. I have some other (anonymous) blogs and I like the new Blogger much better.

P.S. I was looking for info on OCWIC scholarships and it looks like the deadline may have passed for those, but you can still attend the conference if you're interested by going to the registration link: http://cs.hiram.edu/OCWIC/registration.html Some info from the registration site follows:
FEES
The early registration fee (deadline January 17) for OCWIC 2007 is $150. This covers one night's shared lodging, Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, snack breaks and all sessions. A single room can be purchased for an additional $55.

After January 17, it is no longer possible to obtain lodging through the conference; attendees will have to arrange their own lodging with The Deer Creek Resort and Conference Center. For the full conference (all of the above except lodging), the fee is $100. A one-day-only (Friday or Saturday) registration is also available for $60.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships will be available through the generosity of our sponsors. Hopefully we'll be able to provide full, pre-paid registration fees to all women students who register by January 17 and request them. Scholarships do not include the $55 single supplement.

Hey thanks for setting it up - this is great!

was working on software for a wiki yesterday and removed it because it did not work.

I will have it done this weekend.

Welcome to our Blog! Sorry it's not a "blicki" but give us time!
